Floor before drywall. When you re hanging drywall and installing new flooring it s usually best to hang the drywall first and then save the floor for last. The general construction rule is to work from the top of the room. After carefully measuring and cutting out the openings in your sheet. Before the floors go in you can easily shim one end of the jamb to get the door exactly plumb.
At this stage it s still too early to hang drywall. Yes floor refinishing is messy but they don t want to start with a film of gymsum dust all over the place. The floor is sanded anyways so any drywall debris or dust accumulated before the floor is varnished is removed anyway. If you simply have no floor coverings yet and just a subfloor then you will greatly benefit by painting the walls and ceiling before refinishing the floors.
Time and mess if time is of the essence it s quicker to hang the drywall and tape out the walls first. Make sure the haz mat people disinfected your basement before you proceed and run a de humidifier for several days to ensure the dampness is gone. Good luck with your project. The key to solve this problem is to check the fit before you press the drywall tight to the wall.
First time remodelers often make the mistake of letting drywall rest on the floor while attaching it to the vertical wall studs with screws. And it will be unsuccessful. Trying to protect the floor will add time and expense to the drywalling. After floors this would be a huge pain to do since you would need to pull the door out and saw the jamb.
Install drywall before flooring. Repair any cracks in the foundation professionally before you drywall. Do the drywall first. Dealing with the inevitable drywall mess will add time and expense to the floor finishing.
When installing drywall should it rest on the floor. The easiest option would be to coat the walls with a good bonding primer before applying another top coat of paint. Also maybe others are more careful but i found it s hard not to ding the floor a little bit when doing doors afterwards. Then the drywall will break around the electrical box left requiring extra time to patch.
And use a vapor barrier. You can paint with pure freedom even using a paint sprayer and spillages rarely cause much damage. The 1 4 inch drywall should work but will require finishing and replacement of all the trim in the room. The common mistake is to screw the drywall to the framing before trimming the opening.
